Synopsis
--------------------------------------
When the rain stops and the land begins to dry, humanity can do little but look up to the sky and wait for an answer. The relationship between the human world and Phaya Thaen, the celestial ruler associated with rain, begins to fracture.
Phaya Khankhak, a small and seemingly insignificant creature, rises to become the representative of humans and all living beings. Gathering their forces, they ascend to confront the power of the heavens, leading to conflict, negotiation, and eventually an agreement.
Phaya Thaen promises to send rain back to the earth, while humans agree to send a signal to the sky through the launching of rockets, reminding both sides of the promise they have made.
The ancient legend is brought back to raise a contemporary question: in a world where human beings increasingly believe they can control almost everything around them, do we still need to look up to the sky?
And when we encounter forces beyond our control, do we plead, negotiate, attempt to overcome them, or learn how to live alongside them?
Creative Concept
THAEN reinterprets the legends of Phaya Thaen and Phaya Khankhak, as well as the origins of the Bun Bang Fai rocket festival, through a contemporary perspective.
Rather than simply retelling an ancient legend, the performance uses the relationship between humanity and the sky as a starting point for exploring questions of belief, hope, power, and the human desire to control forces that lie beyond our control.
In the contemporary world, technology, knowledge, and increasingly sophisticated tools often give us the sense that we can determine the course of our lives and shape the environment around us. At the same time, we remain vulnerable to nature, change, loss, and countless events that cannot be fully predicted or controlled.
THAEN therefore asks not simply whether we still believe in Phaya Thaen, but what happens when human beings encounter something greater than themselves. Do we pray, resist, negotiate, attempt to conquer it, or learn to form a relationship with it and live alongside it?
Performance Approach
The performance brings together one performer and one musician, combining storytelling, physical performance, movement, sound, live music, and approximately five original songs.
Contemporary music forms the main musical language of the work, with subtle traces of Isan musical sounds and sensibilities. Rather than recreating a traditional folk atmosphere, these elements function as echoes of memory and cultural roots.
The sound of the khaen, a traditional Isan mouth organ, appears sparingly throughout the performance and returns at the end through a short reprise of the opening melody, connecting the beginning and the conclusion of the work.
The overall staging is simple and contemporary, creating an open space for the audience’s imagination rather than attempting to literally recreate the mythical world of the legend.
