เรื่องย่อ / Synopsis

  นับตั้งแต่การเกิดขึ้นของแผ่นทดสอบภาวะบกพร่องในการมองเห็นสี หรือ Ishihara Test เมื่อกว่าหนึ่งศตวรรษที่ผ่านมา ซึ่งคิดค้นโดย ชิโนบุ อิชิฮาระ จักษุแพทย์ชาวญี่ปุ่น เพื่อใช้เป็นเครื่องมือคัดกรองทหารในช่วงสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 1 แผ่นทดสอบดังกล่าวยังคงถูกใช้อย่างแพร่หลายทั่วโลกจนถึงปัจจุบัน รวมถึงในประเทศไทย ตั้งแต่ห้องตรวจสายตาไปจนถึงการตรวจสุขภาพปกติทั่วไป
 
  อย่างไรก็ดี ภายใต้ความเรียบง่ายและความสะดวกในการใช้งาน แผ่นกระดาษที่ประกอบด้วยจุดสีเพียงไม่กี่แผ่นกลับมีอิทธิพลต่อชีวิตของผู้คนอย่างมีนัยสำคัญ ความเข้าใจที่คลาดเคลื่อนเกี่ยวกับภาวะบกพร่องในการมองเห็นสียังนำไปสู่การสร้างภาพจำ การตีตรา และวาทกรรมที่ลดทอนคุณค่าของผู้ที่มีภาวะดังกล่าวอย่างต่อเนื่อง
 
  สำหรับศิลปินเอง ประสบการณ์กับภาวะบกพร่องในการมองเห็นสีไม่ได้จบลงเพียงผลการตรวจบนแผ่นทดสอบ หากแต่แทรกซึมอยู่ในชีวิตประจำวัน ตั้งแต่ การเติบโต การเลือกและรับรู้สี การทำงาน ไปจนถึงความรู้สึกไม่มั่นใจเมื่อการมองเห็นของตนเองไม่สอดคล้องกับสิ่งที่คนส่วนใหญ่เห็น ประสบการณ์เหล่านี้ทำให้คำถามเรื่องการมองเห็น/มองไม่เห็น ไม่ได้เป็นเพียงคำถามทางกายภาพ แต่ยังเกี่ยวข้องกับการรับรู้ตนเองและการถูกมองจากผู้อื่น
 
  Since the introduction of the Ishihara Test more than a century ago, developed by Shinobu Ishihara, a Japanese ophthalmologist, as a screening tool for soldiers during World War I, the test has continued to be widely used around the world to this day, including in Thailand, from eye examination rooms to routine health check-ups.
 
  Yet, beneath its simplicity and ease of use, these sheets of paper made up of only a few colored dots have had a significant impact on people’s lives. Misconceptions surrounding color vision deficiency (CVD) have also contributed to the formation of stereotypes, stigma, and discourses that continue to diminish and devalue those who live with the condition.
 
  For the artist himself (Naruebet Jaksusuwan), the experience of living with color vision deficiency does not end with the results of an Ishihara Test. Rather, it permeates everyday life, from growing up and choosing and perceiving colors, to working and navigating the uncertainty that arises when one’s own perception does not correspond with what most people see. These experiences have made the question of seeing/not seeing more than a physical matter; they are also questions of self-perception and of being seen by others.
