เรื่องย่อ : ประเพณีชิงเปรตเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของ ประเพณีวันสารทเดือน10 ของใต้โดยเฉพาะชาวนครศรีธรรมราชนั้นคุ้นเคยกันเป็นอย่างดี การจัดพิธีชิงเปรตจะจัดขึ้นพร้อมกับพิธีสารทเดือนสิบ ซึ่งเป็นขั้นตอนสุดท้าย การจัดงาน จะมีการแข่งขันปีนหยิบเศษอาหารที่เหลือจากการตั้งเปรตมากิน เพราะเชื่อกันว่าจะเป็นสิริมงคล ถือว่าเป็นพิธีที่มีความครึกครื้นมากพิธีหนึ่ง ประวัติของพิธีนี้ มาจากความเชื่อที่ว่า เมื่อญาติพี่น้องล่วงลับไปแล้ว อาจจะไปเกิดในนรกภูมิ หรืออาจจะไปเกิดเป็นเปรตที่อดอยาก เพื่อชดใช้กรรมที่ทำไว้ตอนที่ยังเป็นมนุษย์ ทำให้ญาติพี่น้องต้องมีการทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลไปให้ นอกจากนั้นสำหรับคนที่เป็นเปรตนั้น ว่ากันว่าจะมีการกลับมาเยี่ยมญาติพี่น้องได้ในวันแรม 1 ค่ำ เดือน 10 และจะกลับไปนรกภูมิอีกครั้งเมื่อถึงวันแรม 15 ค่ำ เดือน 10 ดังนั้นจึงมีการทำบุญอุทิศส่วนกุศลกันในวันดังกล่าวนั่นเอง (แต่จะนิยมทำกันในวันแรม)

Synopsis : Pret is a tall, emaciated ghost of the lowest order, notable for its pinhole-sized mouth and hands the size of a sugar palm leaf. Ching Pret is a part of Sart Day (Thai Sart Day refers to merit-making activities in the middle of the traditional Thai year) especially southern part of Thailand. Ching Pret is the last activity which will be a climbing pole racing for leftover food from Pret. People believe that after life of sinners if they were sent to hell and struggle, they might be return asking for food from people (people can send the food to Pret by offering food for monk) because when they were human they did not do the offering enough to live in hell.
