เมื่อ 260 ปีก่อน บรรพบุรุษตระกูลไฉไล เคยสร้างวีรกรรมโลดโผนจนเป็นเรื่องเล่าขานตำนานคู่ตระกูล
ทวดเทียดเดิมชื่อดอกรัก แต่ปลอมแปลงแต่งกายแสร้งเป็นหญิงไปสืบข่าวการศึกเมื่อก่อนเสียกรุง 2310 โดยใช้นามว่าไฉไล 
(ที่นำมาตั้งเป็นนามสกุลภายหลัง)
หลังจากที่ไฉไลบาดเจ็บในสมรภูมิป้อมบางกอก เมื่อทุเลาก็เร่งรีบเดินทางกลับยังกรุงศรีอยุธยาโดยไม่รั้งรอ
ออกญาจักรีออกประกาศตามจับนาง โดยมีความผิดส่งข่าวศึกมาเป็นกลลวงให้บ้านเมืองโกลาหล แม้จะมีลือว่านางไฉไลตายแล้ว ก็ต้องนำศพมาให้เห็นเป็นที่ประจักษ์
...ไฉไล ต้องหนีไปกบดานที่เชียงคาน โดยแสร้งทำเป็นตายด้วยโรคระบาด แล้วแต่งกลว่าร่างอืดบวม ให้อ้ายคำพันพาออกไปทางประตูผี จากนั้นทั้งสองปลอมตัวเป็นสองผัวเมียทำการค้าลงเรือจากอยุธยาขึ้นไปลพบุรี เพื่อจะข้ามดงพญาไฟไปให้ถึงลำน้ำมูล เทียดไฉไลไม่เคยล่วงรู้มาก่อนเลยว่า การหนีครานี้ ทำให้พบความจริงบางอย่างที่ถูกปิดบังมานาน ทั้งเรื่องราวของพ่อแม่เธอ และผืนแผ่นดินที่เธอรัก

the ancestors of the Chailai family performed a daring heroic act that became a legendary tale passed down through generations.
Their great ancestor was originally named Dok Rak (meaning “Love Blossom”), but disguised herself as a woman to spy for military intelligence before the fall of Ayutthaya in 1767, under the alias Chailai — a name that would later become the family’s surname.
After being wounded in the Battle of the Bangkok Fort, Chailai recovered briefly and hurried back to Ayutthaya without delay.
However, Okya Chakkri (a noble title at the time) issued a royal decree ordering her capture, accusing “Lady Chailai” of treason — claiming her messages about the war were deceitful and had thrown the kingdom into chaos. Even though rumors spread that Chailai had already died, her body had to be brought forth as proof.
...And so, Chailai was forced to flee to Chiang Khan, faking her death by claiming to have succumbed to an epidemic. Her companion Ai Kamphan helped her carry out the ruse, disguising her swollen “corpse” and sneaking her out through the Ghost Gate. The two then disguised themselves as a married couple, boarding a boat from Ayutthaya to Lopburi before crossing the Dong Phaya Fai forest to reach the Mun River.
Chailai never knew that this escape would lead her to uncover long-hidden truths — about her parents, and about the very land she held so dear.
