The ancient kingdom of Britain.
A storm is coming, and this land will soon be submerged.
Almost everyone has fled, and Lear's daughters have also departed.
Lear, abandoned, awaits the clown and the storm in the empty palace.
Shakespeare's "King Lear" has long been considered a classic, exploring the tragedy of human existence, power, family, madness, and death. In this project, we reread the essence of the tragedy in "King Lear" through the keywords of "inevitable decline and isolation."
The madness Lear experiences is not simply a mental breakdown, but the essential loneliness faced by humans after losing the civilization, power, and family he built. The nature that engulfs him, the "storm," is interpreted as a metaphor for the Anthropocene disaster, akin to the climate crisis facing modern people. Therefore, we twisted the original narrative, changing the setting from Lear's voluntary departure into the wilderness to one where everyone leaves and Lear is left alone in the face of a predicted, devastating storm.
The now empty palace is a ruin of civilization, and within it, Lear prepares for his final moments as a human being. Notably, the "fool" who remains by Lear's side appears not as a mere helper, but as Lear's shadow and another form of self.
Through this structure, we aim to reveal the process of a man facing his own divisions and reconciling them as he faces death.
In the final scene, even the Fool departs in the storm, and Lear, left alone, dances for death. This is a gesture of acceptance of nature and the end of life, and an attempt to portray the "act" that humans can perform even in absolute solitude.
This adaptation transcends the simple interpretation of "King Lear" as a narrative of family tragedy. It seeks to reconstruct the relationships between nature and humanity, civilization and death, and existence and shadow through the lens of traditional Korean theater.
