::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: ( English Surtitle provided on SUNDAY’s shows ) ::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: “ Time may change, but the truth stands the test of time “ Synopsis The Tale of Khun Chang Khun Phaen is a long narrative poem that developed over four centuries, first in an oral tradition of stories recited for popular entertainment, and later among literati of the court. At the end of the main story, the king orders the heroine, Wanthong, to choose between her two lovers, Khun Chang and Khun Phaen. When she cannot, he orders her execution. Her son, Phra Wai, petitions for a royal pardon, but the sentence is carried out too soon. In a sequel, probably written in the nineteenth century, Wanthong returns to this world to warn her son that he is being lured into a trap to kill him. She appears as a pret or asurakai, a spirit that is stranded in the netherworld but can return to this world, usually in a fearsome form. This episode has been popular with dramatists, especially because of the chance for special effects. It is also controversial.
